Woices.com (world + voices)
What it is: Geo-localized audio content.
How it works: Users record short audio clips (echoes) that are attached/tagged to a specific object or geographic location. People who later visit that specific location – physically or virtually – can listen to an echo as if they were standing right there with the person who recorded it. Users who record echoes can also create “walks,” which are groups of echoes that are meant to be listened to in sequence. Woices can be used collaboratively, with various group members adding and editing echoes and/or walks created by others within their group. Echoes may be found by map or directory. Users may listen to echoes from their computer or mobile device, or download to their mp3 player.
How it might be used in education: A botany or horticulture instructor might record a tree walk through a campus or arboretum – with identifications and descriptions of specific, notable trees tied to their exact GPS coordinates.
Pros: Not language-specific. Content can be edited/expanded by authorized individuals. Optimized for mobile phones. Cloud-based; no special software required. Basic level of service is free.
Cons: Audio only.
